Some of the Best Date Ideas in The Mall

A national park maintained by the National Park Service, The Mall refers to the grassy lawn and walkways that run from the U.S. Capitol in the East all the way down to the Lincoln Memorial in the West. Encompassing the Washington Monument, WWII Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Mall is also the site of most of the museums that comprise the Smithsonian Institution and the Smithsonian’s annual Folklife Festival.

The Mall is Metro accessible. We recommend taking the Smithsonian stop on the Blue and Orange lines, which will drop you near the center of The Mall in the midst of all the action!

see the monuments

Seeing the monuments is the ultimate DC date! If you and your sweetie are suckers for history, consider going on a guided tour. It’s the best way to learn the inside scoop about the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and other magnificent monuments. But, if you’re looking for a more informal date, feel free to wander the monuments on your own. They are particularly spectacular at night!

go ice-skating

Forgive the pun, but ice skating is a super cool date! Make it romantic by holding hands with your honey as you make your way around the rink. Even if you fall a time or two, you’re bound to have fun as long as you have a good attitude. Outdoor rinks make great Winter dates while indoor rinks allow you to have fun skating all year round!

play frisbee

go to an art museum

Taking a stroll through centuries-old paintings might not scream hot date to you. But, trust us, art galleries are ripe for romance. Art museums are often dimly lit to protect and preserve the paintings and photographs on display. An added benefit? The dim lighting, combined with lots of quiet, secluded corners, makes for a very romantic setting. So go ahead and steal a kiss from your sweetie in front of the Seurat. We won’t tell!

have a picnic

Picnics make for highly romantic but simple dates. Just throw your favorite food — or even just a bottle of wine and some good cheese — into a basket and find a good spot in the park to sit with your sweetie. The best part? Once you’ve finished your meal, you and your honey can snuggle on the blanket!
